Ageing and dependency

People over 64 as a share of the population, and the young and old per 100 people of working age.

The age dependency ratio is the number of people under 15 and over 64 per 100 people of working age, 15 to 64. The old-age dependency ratio counts only those over 64, the people whom pensions and health care must support per 100 workers. The share aged 65 and over is the plainest measure of an ageing population. The UN Population Division estimates them in its World Population Prospects, and the World Bank republishes them.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
