Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)

How corrupt experts and business people see a country's public sector, from 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index scores how corrupt a country's public sector is seen to be by experts and business people. Each year it averages up to 13 independent sources, such as expert assessments and business surveys, each converted to a scale from 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean). It measures perceptions, not corruption itself, because no fully objective national measure of corruption exists. The method has stayed the same since 2012, so scores from 2012 on can be compared over time. Our World in Data republishes the scores.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
