Government spending on education

What governments spend on education at every level, as a share of GDP.

This is what a country's central, regional and local governments spend on education at every level in a year, as a share of GDP. It includes salaries, textbooks, buildings and donor money that passes through the budget. Recent figures come from UNESCO; older ones from records such as League of Nations yearbooks and OECD reports, which differ in method, so read them with care. A higher share means more of the economy goes to education, not more per student or better results. Our World in Data combines the sources.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
