Population, births and deaths

How many people live in each country, how many are born and die, and how many move in or out.

Population counts everyone who lives in a country at mid-year, whatever their legal status or citizenship. The birth rate and the death rate are the live births and the deaths in a year per 1,000 people. When births outnumber deaths a population grows naturally; migration changes it too. Net migration is the number of people who moved into the country in the year minus those who left, citizens and non-citizens alike. The World Bank compiles these figures mainly from the UN Population Division's World Population Prospects, which combines censuses, civil registration and surveys.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
