Deaths from terrorism

People killed in terrorist attacks in each country and year.

This is the number of people killed in terrorist attacks in a country in a year, attackers included. The Global Terrorism Database, kept by the University of Maryland's START consortium, records attacks from news reports since 1970: the violent use of force by non-state actors to reach a political, economic, religious or social goal. Our World in Data republishes it. The count depends on what the press reports, so it is less complete in countries with little press, and 1993 is missing from the database.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
