Greenhouse gas emissions

All greenhouse gases, including methane and nitrous oxide, per person and in total.

These are emissions of all greenhouse gases from energy, industry, agriculture and waste, converted to tonnes of CO2 equivalent by how much each gas warms the planet over 100 years. Unlike the CO2 page, they include methane from cattle, rice and gas leaks and nitrous oxide from fertiliser, which matter a lot for farming countries. Emissions from land use and forests are not included. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre estimates them in its EDGAR database, and the World Bank republishes them.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
