PISA scores

The average scores of 15-year-olds in the OECD's PISA tests of mathematics and reading.

PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, tests 15-year-olds in mathematics, reading and science every three years, in the same way everywhere, so the results compare across countries. The scale is set so that the OECD average was 500 points in the first round; about 40 points correspond to a year of schooling. The OECD runs the tests, with national samples of schools, and Our World in Data republishes the averages. The test of 2021 was moved to 2022 by the pandemic.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
