Drinking water and sanitation

The share of people with safely managed or at least basic drinking water and sanitation.

Safely managed drinking water is water from an improved source at home, available when needed and free of contamination. Safely managed sanitation is a toilet not shared with other households whose waste is treated or safely disposed of. The "at least basic" measures are less strict: an improved source within a 30-minute round trip, or an unshared improved toilet. The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme estimates them from household surveys and censuses for the UN's water and sanitation goal, and the World Bank republishes them. Fewer countries have the safely managed figures.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
