Economic structure

The share of GDP that agriculture, industry and services each produce.

This splits a country's GDP by sector: agriculture, forestry and fishing; industry, which includes mining, manufacturing, energy and construction; and services, from shops and transport to banking, health and government. As countries get richer, work usually moves from farms to factories and then to services. The shares come from the national accounts that each country's statistics office compiles, collected by the World Bank. Taxes and subsidies on products are not assigned to any sector, so the three shares do not always add up to 100.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
