GDP per capita since 1820

GDP per person over two centuries, adjusted for prices across countries and time.

The Maddison Project Database is the longest series of GDP per person there is: for some countries it reaches back to the Middle Ages, for most to the nineteenth century. The values are in international dollars of 2011, so they are comparable across countries and years. The project, founded by the economic historian Angus Maddison and continued at the University of Groningen, pieces together the work of hundreds of historians; the early figures are estimates, and the recent ones follow the national accounts. Our World in Data republishes the database.

About the author

Hello there, I’m Klaus Jürgen Folz. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil, and I work in Austria as a lead Python and Power BI developer. I built Data Mechanics because good decisions start with facts. Public data is often scattered, hard to find or locked behind paywalls, and too much of what we read about the world is biased. Here, every number is shown as it was published, next to its source, so anyone can check it, compare countries and leaders, and draw their own conclusions.
