Employment by sector
Where people work: agriculture, industry or services, and how many work for themselves.
This splits everyone employed into the three sectors they work in, as shares of the total: agriculture, including fishing and forestry; industry, including mining, manufacturing and construction; and services, from shops to schools. As countries grow richer, work moves from farms to factories and then to services. The share who are self-employed, working for themselves or in a family business rather than for a wage, is high where formal jobs are scarce. The International Labour Organization (ILO) models the figures from labour force surveys, and the World Bank republishes them.
