Current account balance
What a country earns from the rest of the world minus what it pays, as a share of GDP.
The current account balance sums up a country's dealings with the rest of the world: exports minus imports of goods and services, plus income from abroad such as interest, dividends and workers' remittances, minus the same flows going out. A surplus means the country lends to the rest of the world; a deficit means it borrows. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) publishes it in its World Economic Outlook. We show past years only and leave out the IMF's forecasts; the latest year can still be an IMF estimate.
